Percy Nicholls Award for 2015

Dr. Yiannis A. Levendis has made outstanding contributions to the field of solid fuel utilization and pollution abatement strategies by characterizing the products of the combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal and biomass, and of alternative fuels, such as waste post-consumer plastics and waste automobile tires. His major achievements include:

  • Clean and efficient conversion of wastes, biomass and coal to thermal energy for use in power applications.
  • Development of surrogate model fuels to facilitate the validation of pertinent mathematical models.
  • Development of value added products from solid biomass fuels.
  • Education and training of students and engineers from industry for sustained future workforce development.

His numerous publications, the institutions that he has served, and those that he has mentored, constitute a worthy legacy to the benefit of all who rely on solid fuels.
